About the scheme

Who was behind the scheme?

The 7 charities that supported Free Wills Month Ireland offer key services in numerous fields - medical research, care of children, heart disease prevention and cure, development of hospice provision, support and advocacy for older people, research and support services for those suffering from MS, overseas aid and lifeboat provision.

How did the scheme work?

Members of the public aged 55 and over contacted one of the firms of solicitors taking part in the campaign at some time between 1st and 30th  April 2009 to request an appointment.

Solicitors wrote Wills to account for the wishes of the individual or couple. Those taking up the offer were under no obligation to leave a gift to one of the Free Wills Month charities, however, many saw the campaign as a chance to help a favourite cause.

Did the charities get a copy of each Will?

No. The only documentation that was sent on to us is the confidential declaration form which asked questions such as where people heard of the scheme, their ages and whether or not they had left a gift to one or more of the charities.

Who was the scheme open to?

Individuals or couples aged 55 and over. In the case of couples making 'mirror' Wills, it was sufficient that one had reached the age of 55.

When was the scheme open?

The promotion ran between 1st and 30thApril 2009.

Where did the scheme run?

Dublin, Cork, Galway, Waterford and Wexford.
